Garlic Scapes

Harvest garlic scapes by cutting the stem close to the leaves when the scape curls twice around itself. Fresh garlic scapes can be kept for several weeks in the refrigerator. We love them finely chopped in vinaigrettes, pan fried and grilled on the BBQ,. Also delicious made into pesto (garlic scapes, oil, salt), you'll want to add it to everything!

Garlic

Harvest the garlic when the leaves begin to change colour and the cloves are well formed, usually in late July to mid-August.  You can lift a plant to check on maturity and see if your garlic is ready to harvest.

Cut the stem 2 inches from the bulb, leave to dry in a dry, well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. The best place to preserve garlic is in the kitchen, for example in a basket on top of your cabinets or in the pantry.

Sowing: Divide the bulbs into cloves. Plant cloves with their tips pointing upwards in the fall and cover with dead leaves or straw if there is not abundant snow cover in winter.

Seed depth: 5 cm

Germination: Garlic will germinate as soon as the snow melts.

Soil: Airy, rich

Location: Sun

Distance between plants: 10-15 cm

Distance between rows: 60 cm
